What are thread veins?

Thread veins, sometimes called telangiectasia or spider veins, are small blood vessels that become visible just under the surface of the skin. On the face they often appear across the cheeks, nose, and chin. On the legs they may show on the thighs, calves, or around the ankles. They are harmless but can create a blotchy or flushed look that makeup does not always cover well. Genetics, sun exposure, temperature changes, hormones, pregnancy, and lifestyle factors can all play a role in their formation.

While creams may soothe redness, they do not remove visible vessels. Laser treatment offers a targeted option by selectively heating the vessel so that it collapses and is naturally cleared by the body over time.

How our laser treatment works

The laser energy is drawn to the red pigment within the blood. A controlled pulse heats the vessel wall, causing it to close. The vessel then fades as the body gradually breaks it down. Because vessel size and depth vary, your practitioner adjusts the energy, pulse duration, and spot size to suit the area being treated. Cooling measures are applied before and after each pulse to maintain comfort and protect the surface of the skin.

Facial vessels often respond more quickly than leg vessels, which can be slightly larger and deeper. Your practitioner will create a plan that reflects the size, colour, and distribution of your veins, as well as your skin tone and medical history.

Who is a good candidate?

Most adults with visible thread veins on the face or legs can be suitable for treatment. You may not be suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of keloid scarring, have an active skin infection, are recently tanned or using sunbeds, or are taking medicines that increase sensitivity to light. During your consultation we will review your medical history, assess your skin, and perform a patch test to confirm safe settings.

Before your appointment

  • Avoid sun exposure and self tan for 4 weeks before treatment.
  • Stop retinoids, exfoliants, and acne treatments 1 week prior unless your prescriber advises otherwise.
  • Arrive with clean skin free from makeup, SPF, perfume, or oils on the treatment area.
  • Tell us about any new medicines, recent illness, or changes to your health since booking.
  • Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol the day before to reduce flushing.
  • For leg treatments, bring loose clothing to avoid friction afterwards.

What to expect on the day

  1. Consultation check in We confirm your goals, review the patch test, and answer questions.
  2. Preparation The skin is cleansed and protective eyewear is provided when required.
  3. Treatment Short laser pulses are applied to each visible vessel. You may feel a quick snap and warmth followed by cooling.
  4. Finish The area may look pink, and vessels can appear darker or greyish immediately after—this is expected.
  5. Aftercare A soothing product and SPF are applied with clear home care guidance.

Aftercare and recovery

  • Redness and mild swelling usually settle within a few hours; occasional bruising can take up to 10 days.
  • Keep the area cool on the first day. Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and very hot showers for 48 hours.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and a bland moisturiser for three to five days. Do not pick or scrub any crusting.
  • Apply a broad spectrum SPF 30 to 50 every morning and minimise direct sun while you complete your course.
  • Delay high intensity exercise and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours to reduce flushing.
  • Makeup can usually be worn the next day if the skin is intact; use clean brushes or sponges.
  • Contact the clinic if you notice unusual discomfort, blistering, or signs of infection.

How many sessions will I need?

  • Many people see visible improvement after just 1 session.
  • A course of 2 to 4 sessions may be needed depending on the area and vessel size.
  • Treatments are spaced every 3 to 4 weeks for the best results.

Results build as the body clears treated vessels. Facial thread veins often respond quickly, while leg vessels can take longer. Because genetics and lifestyle influence future vessel formation, occasional maintenance sessions may be helpful to keep your complexion even.

Results and maintenance

Treated vessels should not return; however, new vessels can form over time. Consistent sun protection, gentle skincare, and avoiding extreme temperature changes can help. If you have a tendency to flush, consider fragrance free skincare and lukewarm water when washing your face. For the legs, avoiding very tight clothing and taking short walking breaks during long periods of standing can be beneficial.

Frequently asked questions

Are the results permanent?

The treated vessels are cleared by the body and should not return. New vessels can appear in the future due to genetics, sun exposure, or lifestyle. Good sun protection and gentle skincare help maintain your results.

Does it work on all skin types?

We can treat a wide range of skin types with careful settings. Your consultation and patch test confirm safety and suitability for your complexion and concerns.

Is this suitable for varicose veins?

No. This treatment targets small superficial vessels. Larger, bulging leg veins require assessment by a medical specialist. We can signpost appropriate services if needed.

Will it hurt?

Most people describe a brief elastic snap with warmth at each pulse. Cooling measures are used throughout to keep you comfortable, and the sensation settles quickly after treatment.

How soon will I see improvement?

Some vessels fade immediately while others darken first and then gradually clear over two to four weeks. Larger leg vessels may take longer or need further sessions.

When can I exercise?

Light activity is usually fine the next day. Avoid high intensity workouts and heat exposure for 24 to 48 hours to minimise flushing and swelling.

Can I have treatment if I take medication?

Certain medicines can increase light sensitivity or bleeding risk. Please bring a list of current medicines to your consultation so we can advise you safely.
