Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

advanced divider

PRP injections are therapeutic plasma injections derived from your own blood. PRP injections are a ground-breaking regenerative treatment that is versatile and minimally invasive and used by stars like Kim Kardashian  and Bar Refaeli.

A small amount of blood (similar to what is required for a basic lab test) is drawn. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge that spins the blood at a fast speed to separate the liquid plasma from other components. The isolated portion of the plasma that is richest in stem cells and growth factors works to signal growth factors which are key in your body’s natural healing and regenerative abilities.

Questions Answered
What does platelet-rich plasma treat?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy can help:

  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stimulate collagen growth
  • Smooth out marionette lines around the mouth and creases on the upper face
  • Improve neck banding
  • Improve acne scarring
  • Treat thinning hair

PRP therapy can complement other skin rejuvenating treatments and is often used in conjunction with other procedures. Because it is so well-tolerated, PRP is excellent for treating sensitive areas. This treatment is safe, effective, and does not require any downtime.

How does PRP therapy work?

The procedure involves the introduction of platelet-rich plasma into depleted areas of the skin. The PRP contains a high concentration of growth factors, which encourage tissue regeneration and healing. The growth factors released from the PRP support and promote:

  • Tissue repair
  • Epithelial cell growth (the cells that line the outer layer of the skin, or epidermis)
  • Collagen-building
  • Regeneration of the skin

To obtain the platelet-rich plasma, blood must first be drawn. After the platelet-rich plasma has been prepared, it be will inject into the treatment area.

The procedure is painless with little to no recovery time is needed. Patients may experience some mild bruising and swelling at the injection site, but these temporary side effects will subside within a few days.

Results will become visible about 3-4 weeks following injections; as the collagen-building process continues, the skin will improve.

Combining PRP Therapy with Microneedling

PRP is also used as a topical treatment with skin rejuvenating treatments such as micro-needling. These treatments create micro-channels in the superficial layers of the skin, allowing the PRP to treat at deeper levels boosting collagen production and treating textural concerns such as acne scarring, skin laxity and fine lines.

Combining PRP with micro-needling – known as the “vampire facial” –  is an ideal treatment for a patient looking to improve acne scarring, wrinkles and lines, skin complexion, melasma, and hyperpigmentation. PRP can be used along with radio-frequency micro-needling and then injected into the problem areas. The treatment is virtually painless with little downtime.

PRP can also be used to treat hair thinning and loss in both male and female patients.  Injectable PRP can also be used in combination with dermal fillers to help restore volume in facial areas.

How Is PRP Facial Procedure Performed?
  • A blood sample from your body is obtained (similar to a regular blood test procedure), and prepared by spinning it in a special centrifuge machine. The specimen obtained is a liquid with the highly concentrated platelet-rich plasma, which contains many growths factors.
  • Your skin is prepared with a special micro-needling device, and the platelet-rich liquid is injected into your skin under local anaesthesia (micro-needling with PRP).

After the PRP facial procedure, you would be able to return home or work immediately. Anaesthetic medication used to numb the skin is not sedating, and you will be able to drive or use machinery safely.
